Instrument Scientist Neutron Imaging (m/f/d)
Technical University Munich operates the high flux Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) located at the scientific campus in Garching, Germany. The neutron source itself, its research instruments as well as the irradiation facilities provide unique possibilities for the scientific and industrial use of neutron beams.
In the group Neutron Imaging, we are offering a full-time scientist position (40 hours / week) as Instrument Scientist Neutron Imaging (m/f/d).
The Neutron Imaging Group at the FRM II operates two world-leading instruments, ANTARES and NECTAR, providing complementary capabilities for radiography and tomography with neutrons. The group plays a key role in advancing methodological development in neutron imaging worldwide.
ANTARES is a versatile imaging instrument using thermal and cold neutrons for a broad range of radiography and tomography applications. NECTAR can switch between thermal- and fast-neutron operation and offers worldwide unique capabilities for fast-neutron imaging, enabling the investigation of large and highly absorbing samples that are difficult to access with conventional neutron or X-ray imaging. In recent years, multimodal imaging approaches combining neutron imaging with complementary imaging and characterization techniques have gained increasing importance for the quantitative characterization of materials and functional systems. The complementary capabilities of ANTARES and NECTAR provide an excellent basis for developing and applying such approaches.
Tasks and Responsibilities
You will work across our neutron imaging activities at ANTARES and NECTAR, with a particular focus on fast-neutron imaging and the operation and further development of NECTAR. Your tasks include
- Implementation and commissioning of advanced neutron imaging methodologies, with a particular focus on fast-neutron imaging at NECTAR.
- Support of user operation and scientific experiments at ANTARES and NECTAR, with a primary focus on NECTAR.
- Development of multimodal and multi-probe imaging approaches, exploiting complementary information provided by thermal and fast neutrons, gamma rays, and other complementary techniques.
- Development of image processing, reconstruction and data analysis workflows for quantitative and multimodal imaging applications.
- Contribution to technical reports, instrument documentation and procedures.
- Development of an active scientific research profile and establishment of new collaborations in neutron imaging.
- Acquisition and development of collaborative research projects and contribution to research proposals.
Qualification and Experience
- PhD in physics, engineering, materials science, computer science, imaging science, or a related field.
- Strong background in neutron imaging, X-ray imaging, tomography, image processing, computer vision, or related experimental techniques.
- Hands-on experience with experimental techniques, including data acquisition, instrumentation, or experimental setups.
- Experience with scientific programming and data analysis (e.g. Python, C++, MATLAB).
- Experience in image reconstruction, quantitative image analysis, machine learning, or multimodal data fusion is highly desirable.
- Experience with neutron scattering or large-scale research facilities is beneficial.
- Self-motivated and independent working style combined with the ability to work in an international and interdisciplinary team.
- Excellent communication skills in English; German language skills are beneficial.
- Willingness to work in a controlled area in a research reactor environment.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent scientific research and motivation to develop an own scientific research profile.
