The Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM, www.bnitm.de/en) is the largest Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Germany and member of the Leibniz Research Association, the National Reference Centre for Tropical Pathogens, and a WHO Collaborating Centre.

The Structural Virology group of Dr. Maria Rosenthal at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) in Hamburg is looking for a highly motivated

Postdoc (m/f/d)
- full-time or part-time, EG 13 TV-AVH -


The research group under the direction of Dr. Maria Rosenthal is combining structural biology, virology and biochemistry methods to investigate the mechanisms of genome replication and transcription of medically relevant bunyaviruses and develop antiviral strategies.

Core tasks of this position will include:

  • Molecular biology (PCR, cloning, RNA/DNA handling, etc.)
  • Protein biochemistry (expression, purification, biochemical assays, etc.)
  • Structural biology (cryo-EM and/or X-ray crystallography, model building&validation, integrative modelling etc.)
  • High-throughput screening at the Fraunhofer ITMP ScreeningPort (Hamburg)
  • Detailed documentation and presentation of experiments internally and externally
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently and creatively
  • Interest and ability to develop new aspects within the given research focus
  • Technical training and co-supervision of PhD students
  • Supervision of bachelor and master's students

Your Profile:

  • Completed PhD in the field of biochemistry and/or structural biology
  • Strong expertise and experience in protein expression, protein purification and biochemical assays
  • Expertise and experience in cryo-EM or protein crystallography (sample preparation/crystallization and data processing) is beneficial
  • Experience with biophysical methods for protein-ligand interaction is a plus
  • Experience with working in the radioactivity lab is a plus
  • Experience with common model building and refinement programs (Coot, Phenix, CCP4) is beneficial
  • Bioinformatics/coding skills are a plus
  • Proficiency in English (oral and written)
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to plan and execute experiments independently and flexibly
  • Strong team spirit and communication skills
  • Creative mindset and strong problem-solving capabilities
  • Proficiency in commonly used laboratory software is expected (Office, PyMOL, ChimeraX etc.)
  • Willingness to attract third-party funding and contribute to joint applications for research funds
  • Willingness to work both at BNITM and the Fraunhofer ITMP ScreeningPort (Hamburg)

Remuneration is paid in accordance with TV-AVH (collective agreement of the Hamburg Labour Law Association) in pay group EG 13. The position should start in October 2025 and is initially limited to 2 years.
