The Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) is the largest Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Germany with approximately 400 employees. It is the National Reference Centre for Tropical Pathogens, a WHO Collaborating Centre and member of the Leibniz Research Association.
 
The Research Group Implementation Research (AG Fusco) at the BNITM in Hamburg invites applications for one exciting position starting as of 1 April 2026 or later for the role:


Epidemiologist/Biostatistician (m/f/d)
 

The group's main research topics include operational and implementation research on the prevention and management of diseases of vulnerable populations, with a main emphasis on women's health and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) such as schistosomiasis. We are looking for a highly motivated epidemiologist/statistician with experience in designing epidemiological studies and analysing data to join our team and add their complementary skills. The applicant will be based in Hamburg, Germany, and must be able to work independently, and as a member of a multicultural, multidisciplinary team to carry out their duties.
 

Your responsibilities:

  • Statistical analysis of studies implemented within the group
  • Coordinating statistical analysis with a small group of PhD and Master students
  • Supervise data management procedures of ongoing studies (e.g., data cleaning, data reconciliation, query management, and data quality monitoring)
  • Support the planning, design, and epidemiological conduct of research studies with primary data collection in the Global South (e.g., Madagascar)
  • Contribute to study protocols, grant proposals, scientific publications, statistical and project reports
Your profile:
  • University degree (PhD) or any other equivalent combination of education in epidemiology related sciences, including an excellent knowledge of biostatistics or data science
  • Strong quantitative analytical research skills, including data management
  • Skills in planning and designing epidemiological research studies
  • General knowledge in programming and the use of databases (experience in plausibility and validity checks); experience in database software (REDCap) is beneficial
  • Expertise in the field of intervention studies
  • Statistical analysis skills using Stata, R, or other statistical software
  • Full proficiency in written and spoken English, working knowledge of French or German is not required but considered an asset
  • Creativity and commitment to the research group
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in a multi-disciplinary and international team
