Employment Opportunity: DIRECTOR OF CONSTRUCTION (m/f/d)

Our team is looking for a Director of Construction who will have the responsibility for overseeing the construction of our wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) energy projects in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and eventually throughout Canada. 

Job Description

This is a results-oriented role that would suit a highly motivated individual with experience in the renewable energy industry. The successful candidate will work with SWEB Development's (SWEB) team members with expertise in renewable energy policy and incentives, real estate, GIS, legal, design, permitting, site preparation, engineering and finance. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Coordinate and oversee supplier and contractor performance during the construction of wind and solar generation assets and compare to contractual obligations
  • Manage construction budgets and sign-off on construction related invoices
  • Assist team members in estimating construction costs based on preliminary civil and electrical designs of wind & solar energy projects
  • Assist in reviewing engineered civil and electrical drawings for projects in construction
  • Represent SWEB as a technical expert with turbine manufacturers, engineering consultants, contractors, and permitting bodies
  • Attend construction management meetings and act as "Owners Representative" on construction sites over the course of the projects
  • Provide regular construction updates to senior management, lenders, consultants, etc.
  • Track technological advancements and drive adoption of new materials and technologies, as applicable
  • Provide expertise during the review and negotiation of major project agreements, including for turbine supply, turbine operation and construction services
  • Support the pre-construction team with equipment delivery requirements and environmental monitoring, environmental mitigation, etc.
  • Lead tenders for EPC and construction services
  • Support the team based on know-how and experience in respect to design, equipment selection and changes as well as managing utility and contractor schedules 
  • Support the financing team and operations team with technical queries
  • Supporting the development of Battery Energy Storage Systems as required

Qualifications & Skills

  • 5-10 years of experience with the delivery, installation, operation, repair and commissioning of wind turbines
  • Working knowledge in respect to the function and construction of substations, collector and transmission systems
  • Strong network in the construction industry (civil, electrical, transportation) throughout the Maritimes
  • Ability to support schedule planning, execution and compliance
  • Experience with budgeting processes and budget monitoring
  • Business mindset and willingness to support the team with expertise and cost assumptions for the benefit of projects in development
  • Strong knowledge of worksite safety requirements and best practices
  • Experience with the installation or operation of solar PV energy or battery storage is an asset
  • Experience with civil engineering work such as road design, foundation design, cost estimation, construction support services, etc. is considered an asset
  • Strong analytical and problem solving capabilities, strong attention to detail, extremely organized and able to manage a myriad of competing priorities
  • Able to summarize complex issues and convey information to enable efficient decision making
